This involves an integrated unit of 3 different capabilities. In addition to both Patriots, it includes a Nasams air defense system and anti-drone systems. This provides the Netherlands, together with partners, layered air defense against potential threats from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter jets, helicopters, and drones.
Brekelmans: “Defence provides advanced capabilities. They are scarce, but the Netherlands is able to offer them. This deployment contributes to 3 important goals: defending NATO territory, deterring Russian aggression, and providing unwavering support to Ukraine. This keeps the Russian threat as far away as possible.”
NSATU coordinates and facilitates the training of Ukrainian soldiers and provides military support to the country. The military equipment donated to Ukraine by NATO countries must reach its destination safely. The air defense enables NSATU to carry out these logistical activities safely.
Deployment of F-35s
Earlier, the Netherlands committed to deploying F-35 fighter jets over Poland. They, together with Norwegian colleagues, will guard the NATO airspace from September 1 to December 1. The deployment is also intended to deter Russia and protect military equipment going to Ukraine.
