Minister Ruben Brekelmans made this announcement in Brussels at the meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG). In this meeting, ministers from over 50 countries coordinate military support for Ukraine. The weapons package has a total value of
€420 million (500 million dollars). The Netherlands contributes approximately €90 million. This money comes from the €750 million previously pledged.
Brekelmans: Despite all diplomatic efforts, we see daily that Russian terrorist attacks continue. With temperatures dropping to -20 in Ukraine, Russian drones and missiles are deliberately fired at energy facilities. This is simply criminal. It is therefore very important that we continue to massively support Ukraine, especially with air defense systems. Together with the United Kingdom, Norway, and Sweden, we are once again making an important contribution here. It is crucial that other European countries also step up.
Urgent Need
The PURL packages contain equipment that is urgently needed and can be delivered quickly. This allows Ukraine to continue defending itself against Russian aggression in the short term. The Netherlands is supplying equipment from American stock, such as Patriot missiles, artillery ammunition, F-16 ammunition, and spare parts.
F-16 Simulators
In the Belgian capital, Brekelmans also announced that the Netherlands will supply F-16 simulators to Ukraine. Former Dutch F-16s are actively used by the Ukrainian Air Force to defend their country against Russian attacks. The simulators play a crucial role in pilot training. Due to operational security, details of this delivery are communicated cautiously.
