The current tax treaty with Thailand dates back to 1975 and is due for renewal. The updated treaty facilitates easier exchange of fiscal information, enabling tax authorities to obtain the necessary data for effective audits. Additionally, concrete measures have been taken against tax avoidance. The countries cooperate to combat treaty abuse and artificial arrangements.
Pension Income
Thailand is a popular destination for Dutch emigrants, especially retirees. With the new treaty coming into effect, the right to tax pension income will return to the Netherlands. This means Dutch pensions of Dutch residents living in Thailand will be taxed according to Dutch rules.
Next Steps
Now that the new tax treaty has been signed by both countries, it will be submitted to the Council of State for advice. Afterwards, the treaty will be sent to parliament for approval. Before the new treaty takes effect, Thailand must also complete its approval process.
