Number of Road Inspectors at Rijkswaterstaat to Increase Structurally

The number of road inspectors at Rijkswaterstaat is set to increase significantly. The capacity will be structurally expanded by 38 FTE, an increase of more than ten percent. Currently, there are about 300 road inspectors. This expansion is necessary to handle the growing number of incidents. On the main road network, the number of breakdowns and accidents is increasing year on year due to increased traffic. Road inspectors ensure the security and swift handling of these incidents.

Minister Madlener: “Incidents on the road are not only inconvenient for the drivers involved, but also lead to delays for other road users. And while we want to keep moving together. Road inspectors at Rijkswaterstaat are therefore working hard to resolve these situations, so that everyone can get back on the road as quickly as possible. This expansion is an important step in improving traffic flow on our roads.”

Rijkswaterstaat is responsible for safety and traffic flow on Dutch highways in the event of an accident. Road inspectors ensure that other emergency services can also work quickly and safely, and that involved vehicles are removed promptly. In recent years, traffic congestion and the number of so-called incident reports have increased significantly. Forecasts from the Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy (KiM) indicate that this trend will continue in the coming years. The increase is partly due to the rising number of motorists and breakdowns. Additionally, motorists are more often distracted, resulting in incidents.
