A circular economy is a future-proof economy. In a circular economy, we use our raw materials and products smartly. Nothing is wasted anymore; we continue to use without consuming. This way, we maintain our prosperity and earning capacity without being too dependent on other countries for our raw materials or depleting the planet.

Preserving the value of raw materials

It is about how we design our products, use them longer, and recycle them at a high quality. This way, we preserve the value of the raw materials we use and prevent unnecessary products and raw materials from ending up in the incinerator.

State Secretary Heijnen: “The circular economy contributes to solutions for many social problems. Raw materials remain in the cycle, preventing dependence on other countries, environmental pollution, CO2 emissions, and growing waste mountains. But the transition to a circular economy will not happen by itself. That is why I am very pleased that Steven van Eijck, who has extensive experience and knowledge of the circular economy, is willing to further drive this transition as special government representative.”

Liaison

The Special Government Representative for the Circular Economy has the task of contributing to the optimal realization of a circular economy within the framework of the National Circular Economy Program. He will act as a liaison between businesses, civil society organizations, and the central government. He will also provide solicited and unsolicited signals and advice to the involved ministers about the progress of the implementation.

Steven van Eijck is a crown member of the Social and Economic Council (SER). Additionally, since 2021, he has been chairman of the foundation Organization Producer Responsibility E-waste Netherlands (OPEN) and Wecycle.

He will periodically report to the government as a government representative.
