In 2021, cracks were found in the iconic cast-iron lighthouse. Due to these cracks, the nearly 150-year-old lighthouse was no longer safe and had to be closed. Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, research has been conducted over the past years to determine if and how the cracks can be repaired.
Although not all research has been fully completed, it is now clear that renovating the lighthouse is possible. The condition of the lighthouse will be preserved as much as possible. Rijkswaterstaat will continue working on the final design in the coming period. The renovation is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
“De Lange Jaap is a well-known landmark in the area, and more broadly, in the Netherlands. It is wonderful news that it can be preserved for the Netherlands,” said Minister Tieman. “I am glad that with this decision, we can put an end to years of uncertainty about the future of this iconic lighthouse.”
