Prof. Van Kampen is a professor of Criminal Law Practice at Utrecht University. She is also a substitute judge at the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal and a criminal lawyer. Previously, she was an associate professor at Leiden University and a lawyer at various law firms. She has also held several positions at the Netherlands Bar Association.
Advocates-General work in the Public Prosecution Service at the Supreme Court and provide advice to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands. These so-called conclusions are significant legal opinions in cases brought before the Supreme Court in cassation. The Supreme Court is the highest court in civil, criminal, and tax cases. As the highest court, the Supreme Court can rule on judicial decisions subject to cassation appeals. The Supreme Court then assesses whether the law has been correctly applied, whether the correct procedures have been followed, and whether a ruling is sufficiently and clearly substantiated.
