Minister Weerwind: “Every resident in the Netherlands must feel that the law is also for them. This includes the residents of the Caribbean Netherlands. This begins with reliable, understandable information and clear legal advice. Staff at the Legal Desk provide this assistance every day in European Netherlands. It is high time that the residents of the Caribbean Netherlands can also make use of this.”
Access to Justice
Residents of the Caribbean Netherlands will be better informed about their rights and the possibilities to enforce them with the services of a Legal Desk. Problems or disputes can thus be resolved earlier, preventing unnecessary escalation. Staff at the Legal Desk provide information, help, and advice but also refer to a specialist or social assistance if needed. Residents can also report discrimination and seek legal help in cases of unequal treatment at the desk. The service will not impose an income limit so that all residents can receive help. The service is aimed at individuals, not self-employed persons and entrepreneurs.
Local Environment and Needs
The Legal Desk will tailor the help and support to the demand on the islands. This means that people must receive information, help, and advice in their own language from professionals who have a connection to the islands. Existing social organizations on the islands will be actively involved in the service. Active outreach is needed to bring the Legal Desk to attention. Consideration will also be given to the availability and use of digital resources in setting up the service.
