Why this call?
The electricity grid is reaching its limits in more and more places. This is because we are using or producing more electricity at the same time, for example with solar panels. The grid operators are busy expanding the electricity grid, for example by laying thicker cables in the ground, but that takes time. To prevent outages, it is important that we do not overload the electricity grid, hence the call to use less electricity during the busiest moments where possible.
Although most people at home do not yet notice direct consequences, the impact on society is significant. If we do nothing, the risk of power outages increases, new residential areas may sometimes not be connected, and companies are already on a waiting list for a new or heavier electricity connection. This prevents them from further sustainability or growth. This affects the economy and jobs in the Netherlands.
Better use of the electricity grid
The government and grid operators are working hard to expand and strengthen the electricity grid. But that is complex and takes time. Until then, it is crucial that we use the existing grid more intelligently. Outside peak hours, especially during the day, there is often still enough capacity on the electricity grid. We can better utilize that capacity, both for people at home and for businesses.
For example, those who have solar panels can use their own generated electricity when the sun is shining — that is sustainable and efficient. Even without panels, it pays to use electricity at times when the grid is less burdened. The key is to make conscious choices.
This does not mean that no electricity should be used between 4 PM and 9 PM. Some devices, such as charging stations for electric or hybrid cars and heat pumps, use a lot of electricity but can often be easily turned on later. Devices like washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers can be easily scheduled with a timer or app. They do not heavily burden the grid, but moving their use is easy and helps. For other devices, such as LED lighting, televisions, or laptops, usage in the evening hours is not a problem. And cooking on an electric stove requires a fair amount of power, but the usage is usually of short duration.
Mass media campaign
‘Zet Ook De Knop Om’ is a broad awareness campaign aimed at all Dutch people between the ages of 18 and 59, with extra attention for young people through social content. The campaign consists of TV and radio commercials, outdoor advertising, online videos, banners, and social media. The duration is from April 28 to June 22, 2025.
