Expo 2025 will take place from April 13, 2025, to October 13, 2025. More than 150 countries and organizations will present themselves in national pavilions to an international audience. The Netherlands will participate in the world exhibition with a fully circular pavilion. Secretary of State Rummenie is making this visit due to two trade missions taking place around innovative proteins and healthy nutrition. In September, there will be another trade mission focused on horticultural technology.

The visit starts on Monday, June 9, with the opening of the ‘Future Food and Health’ symposium in Osaka, which will focus on current Dutch developments and international cooperation in the field of innovative proteins and healthy nutrition aimed at the future. This symposium, which will also involve Japanese companies and organizations, is organized by the Ministry of LVVN in close collaboration with Oost NL on behalf of all regional development agencies. The Secretary of State will also speak with a representative from the National Agricultural and Food Research Organization (NARO), comparable to Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
On Tuesday, June 10, Secretary of State Rummenie will visit the tomato grower Hyogo Nextfarm: with 4 hectares, one of the first largest greenhouses in Japan, utilizing the Dutch innovative horticultural model. Also on that day, the Grow with Intelligence event by Hoogendoorn will take place at the World Expo. The event aims to explore the integration of advanced technologies such as intelligent algorithms (AI) and vision technologies, which marks a turning point for the future of the horticultural sector.
On Wednesday, June 11, the Secretary of State will visit FrieslandCampina at the Dutch pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka. FrieslandCampina will organize the symposium “Doing Dairy Right” to further strengthen the position of the Dutch dairy sector in the region. The Secretary of State will open the symposium. He will also see one of the largest sushi conveyor belts in the world, measuring 135 meters long from Kura Sushi, known for its innovative approach and efforts to support sustainable fishing. The expo menu will also feature dishes from participating countries, including herring from the Netherlands.
On Thursday, June 12, the European representation in Japan will organize an EU symposium at the Expo to promote European products and the European market. Rummenie will speak with, among others, European Commissioner Christophe Hansen for Agriculture, who is in Japan as part of a European trade mission. Secretary of State Rummenie will participate in a panel discussion on sustainability and innovation in the agricultural and food sector, along with his Irish colleague Minister Heydon and Dirk Jacobs from Food Drink Europe.
On Friday, June 13, Rummenie will visit the Ministry of Agriculture in Tokyo, where he will be received by Minister Koizumi. He will also have discussions with Dutch agro-companies established in Japan.
