Femke Marije Wiersma, Minister of LVVN: “A relief for both the free-range sector and hobbyists: the housing and shielding requirement is largely being withdrawn and the chickens can go outside again. Although the risk has decreased, we remain alert and will closely monitor the situation.”
Risk to the Poultry Sector Reduced
The minister made this decision based on a new risk assessment from the expert group on animal diseases. This group meets regularly to assess the avian influenza situation based on new information. The number of wild birds with avian influenza is steadily decreasing. In Europe, the number of outbreaks at commercial poultry farms has also declined in recent months. The risk of introduction of avian influenza at poultry farms is now assessed as low to moderate. Previously, the risk was moderate to high. Therefore, it has been decided to gradually withdraw the housing and shielding requirement, in line with the approach of previous years.
Vigilance Remains
The housing and shielding requirement has been in effect since November 20, 2024. We have seen in previous withdrawals that the situation can change quickly and that avian influenza is unpredictable. For this reason, the Ministry of LVVN will closely monitor the situation. Based on the situation and risk assessments, the minister will determine if and when national measures, such as the housing and shielding requirement, can also be relaxed in the Gelderse Vallei. New developments, such as outbreaks, may again require tightening measures.
