Queen Máxima opens the year and talks with volunteers about their experiences and the role of volunteer work in society. Prior to the opening, volunteer organizations, educational institutions, funds, governments, and companies discuss how cooperation can be further strengthened. They explore how their impact on social issues can be increased and present their ambitions during the plenary program.
The International Year of the Volunteer was proclaimed by the United Nations because volunteers play an indispensable role in strengthening social cohesion, promoting livelihood security, and building a just, resilient, and sustainable society. Volunteers contribute significantly to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
