Everyone in the Netherlands must be able to trust in good and safe care. The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ), as part of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, independently supervises the quality, safety, and accessibility of healthcare and youth care in the Netherlands. Effective supervision is paramount. The IGJ sets the agenda, stimulates, and intervenes where necessary, and monitors based on laws and regulations. The Inspector-General leads this effort, demonstrates perseverance, provides clear direction, sets frameworks, and strengthens ownership at all levels within the organization. This is necessary because healthcare in the Netherlands and the international market for medicines and medical devices is under pressure. Smart choices are needed to keep care good and accessible, including the use of digital innovations, while considering the limited capacity of healthcare workers. Supervision also requires development and change, for which the Inspector-General is ultimately responsible.
