“The Netherlands has long advocated for adjustment and simplification of European laws and regulations,” says Minister Keijzer. “It is good to see that this message has been received in Brussels. More and more countries are facing limitations. Measures and deregulation are needed sooner than 2027, but a first step has been taken. I will now consult with the Commission as soon as possible to see how we can seize the opportunities offered in the Netherlands. Early next year, the cabinet will inform the House of Representatives about the Dutch position.”

With changes to state aid rules, governments will have the possibility to financially support housing corporations or other developers for the construction of mid-rent homes, where currently this is only allowed for social rental homes. The removal and simplification of rules focuses, among other things, on a more pragmatic approach to species protection under the Birds and Habitats Directives. The use of good interoperable data via Building Information Modelling (BIM) can speed up procedures. Furthermore, the Commission wants to stimulate factory-made and modular housing construction to accelerate housing development, invest in training programs to ensure sufficient personnel, and promote the use of reused and bio-based materials.
