Isolation Subsidy Nij Begun Gradually Starting

Today, the scheme has been published allowing homeowners in Groningen and North Drenthe to apply for isolation subsidies to insulate and ventilate their homes to the standard for home insulation. A home meets the standard when it is sufficiently insulated to be able to become gas-free. For homeowners who want to retroactively use the subsidy, the application portal opens on June 3. From September 2, the portal will gradually open for homeowners who still want to take insulation or ventilation measures.

The scheme is part of Nij Begun and will run for the next 10 years. The insulation approach is one of the measures of Nij Begun to settle the legacy debt to Groningen and North Drenthe as a result of gas extraction. The result of the insulation approach is a well-insulated house and a lower energy bill.

Subsidy retroactively: from June 3, 2025

Homeowners who have already taken insulation and/or ventilation measures between April 25, 2023, and June 2, 2025, can apply for subsidies retroactively from June 3, 2025, at the Northern Netherlands Cooperation (SNN). These applications can be submitted until October 1, 2026. More information is available on the SNN website.

New subsidy applications: from September 2, 2025

For new applications, the subsidy portal will open on September 2, 2025, phased by postal area. There is enough money available for everyone who qualifies for this subsidy. There is also plenty of time – until June 3, 2035 – to submit the application. After the subsidy is granted, there is 2 years to carry out the work.

Insulation plan: when needed, when not

To determine which insulation and ventilation measures are necessary to meet the insulation standard, homeowners can have an insulation advisor come by. The insulation advisor creates an insulation plan. The plan is simple, free, and provides well-founded advice to homeowners on what measures are needed to meet the standard. Important here is the focus on ventilation. Good ventilation is necessary to prevent mold in the home, among other things.

The insulation plan is a handy tool, but not always mandatory. For individual measures and if the total costs remain below €10,000, homeowners can also get started without an insulation plan. Think of a single measure, such as cavity wall insulation or floor insulation. This applies to homes built between 1965 and 1991 that are not monuments.

Monthly opening of the subsidy portal

The opportunity to apply for subsidies starts from September 2, 2025. Every month, the portal opens for new postal codes to avoid queues. From August 2026, the portal will be open for all postal areas and the isolation subsidy will remain available until 2035. Check this PDF for the order of postcode phasing. Applications go through the SNN.

Support at every step

From the moment the subsidy portal opens in September, homeowners can receive support at every step. From creating an insulation plan to applying for subsidies and carrying out the work.
