The committee for Immigration and Asylum/JBZ Council is organizing an expert meeting on Tuesday, September 30, regarding the proposal for a Return Regulation. On March 11, 2025, the European Commission published a proposal for a regulation establishing a common system for the return of third-country nationals who are illegally residing in the Union. This regulation is intended to replace the current Return Directive and related EU legislation.

Expert Meeting September 30

The aim of the meeting is knowledge acquisition and enhancement. Areas for questions include:

  • How does the proposal relate to (inter)national regulations and treaties?
  • What is the expected impact and effectiveness of the proposal (there is a lack of an impact assessment)?
  • What are the consequences for vulnerable groups, including children and unaccompanied minors?
  • What does the proposal mean for legal certainty, enforceability, and maintainability?
  • What are the main changes that the proposal aims for?

Program

Representatives from Nidos, PICUM, the Meijers Committee, and academia will each provide a short introduction of about ten minutes, after which there will be an opportunity for questions. The expert meeting will start at 19:00 and will be chaired by senator Alexander van Hattem (PVV), chair of the I&A/JBZ committee.

Practical Information

The meeting is from 19:00 to 21:00. You can attend the expert meeting or follow it via livestream.
