This year, the States General will be present to commemorate and celebrate 80 years of freedom. The commemoration will take place at various locations.
On Saturday, May 10, in the presence of the President of the Senate Jan Anthonie Bruijn and Roelien Kamminga, Vice President of the House of Representatives, the Battle of Ypenburg, also known as the Battle of the Residence, was commemorated. The battle for Ypenburg airfield took place on May 10, 1940.
On Monday, May 5, the President of the Senate Bruijn and the President of the House of Representatives Bosma were present in Wageningen at the National Celebration of Liberation. The Polish Prime Minister Tusk gave the May 5 lecture, and Prime Minister Schoof lit the liberation fire, signaling the start of the fourteen liberation festivals in the Netherlands.
On May 4, during the National Remembrance Day at Dam Square in Amsterdam, all civilians and military personnel who have died since the outbreak of World War II were commemorated. The King and Queen laid a wreath on behalf of the entire Dutch population. Children and grandchildren of survivors laid wreaths for various groups of war victims.
At the commemoration of all military personnel of the Dutch Air Force who died in military actions at the former Soesterberg airbase, the States General was represented by a delegation of members of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Earlier in the day, Dutch war victims were commemorated in the States Passage of the House of Representatives with the traditional turning of a page of the Roll of Honor of the Fallen.
Both Presidents of the Senate and House of Representatives were present at the Yom HaShoah commemoration in Amsterdam. On Yom HaShoah, the Jewish community worldwide commemorates the victims of Nazi terror.
