President Ursula von der Leyen participated in the European Council summit focused on European defence, geoeconomics, support for Ukraine, and the Middle East situation.
EU Leaders reviewed recent efforts to enhance defence investment through the Readiness 2030 Plan. As President von der Leyen noted, 16 Member States activated the National Escape Clause to boost defence spending, with 10 interested in loans under SAFE.
She also mentioned the simplification package for defence proposed by the Commission and urged swift adoption by co-legislators. Increased cooperation with foreign partners, including Japan, South Korea, the UK, Canada, and soon Australia, was highlighted as key for strategic security.
Leaders addressed EU competitiveness and ongoing trade negotiations with the US. President von der Leyen shared her discussions with President Trump at the G7, aiming to accelerate negotiations.
“We are prepared for a deal, yet we are also ready for the possibility of no agreement. Hence, we consulted on a rebalancing list to protect European interests,” she stated.
The summit included a video conference with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, reaffirming support for a lasting peace. President von der Leyen emphasized the EUs recent support, including the 18th package of sanctions to pressure Russia.
She noted Ukraines reform progress despite ongoing conflict, advocating for the opening of negotiation clusters. “Ukraine merits moving forward in its accession process,” she affirmed.
Leaders called for stability in the Middle East, welcoming a ceasefire and stressing the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. They reiterated calls for humanitarian aid access in Gaza.
This summit marked the final session under the Polish Presidency. President von der Leyen praised Prime Minister Donald Tusk for his presidency achievements.
“You tackled challenges effectively, closing 37 legislative files and advancing support for Ukraine through sanctions and tariffs. Thank you for your commitment to Europe,” she concluded.
