To ease Ukraines global market access and strengthen EU trade ties, the EU and Ukraine have extended their Road Transport Agreement until 31 December 2025.
Since its start on 29 June 2022, the Agreement boosted road trade between Ukraine and the EU. The extension in June 2024 further enhanced trade.
EU road imports from Ukraine rose by 42% in volume and 28% in value, while exports increased by 37% in volume and 50% in value, showing the Agreements success in economic cooperation.
Background
Since its signing, the Agreement led to over 200,000 extra tonnes of Ukrainian exports monthly to the EU. Imports from the EU rose by the same amount.
Signed on 29 June 2022 post Russias Ukraine invasion, it aids Ukraines global market access and strengthens EU trade ties.
On 20 June 2024, it was extended until 30 June 2025 with automatic renewals unless objections are raised with evidence of market issues.
Initially to counter lost routes from Russian aggression, it supports EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, crucial for moving goods like fuel and aid, and exporting grain, ores, and steel to the EU and beyond.
The June 2024 extension brought stronger enforcement and market disturbance solutions, including a monitoring group.
A similar agreement exists with Moldova.
