According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, support for the EUs Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is at a record high. 78% of people are aware of the EU agricultural policy. Over 70% believe that through the CAP, the EU is providing safe, healthy, and sustainable food of high quality. This indicates keen awareness of the vital role of EU agricultural policies.

Most EU citizens feel that the EU, via the CAP, ensures a stable food supply (81%). About seven in ten agree the CAP contributes to sustainable resource management (72%), development of research and digital solutions for the agriculture and food sectors (71%), and strengthens the role of farmers in the food chain (70%). Additionally, many believe the policy boosts investments, creates jobs in agriculture (70%), combats climate change (70%), and ensures reasonable food prices (69%). More than six in ten believe the CAP reduces regional inequalities (66%) and encourages young people to join the agricultural industry (63%).

The survey shows a strong appreciation for farmers, with 92% saying that agriculture and rural areas are important for the future, with 52% considering them very important. More than half (56%) feel the level of EU support to farmers to stabilize their income is appropriate, marking an increase of ten percentage points since 2022 and the highest level since 2013. Almost nine in ten (88%) support the continuation of EU subsidies to farmers for environmentally and climate-beneficial agricultural practices. The results also indicate that 62% believe agriculture has already significantly contributed to fighting climate change.

Regarding priorities and expectations, an overwhelming majority stated that ensuring a stable food supply in the EU at all times (94%), maintaining reasonable food prices for consumers (92%), sustainable resource management (91%), and strengthening the farmers role in the food chain (90%) are crucial.

EU trade agreements are widely seen as successful by Europeans, with a significant majority believing they bring notable benefits to EU agriculture and consumers. Specifically, 76% agree these agreements diversify markets and supplies of agricultural products in the EU. More than seven in ten think these trade deals enhance exports for EU agricultural products globally (73%) and promote EU labor and environmental standards, including animal welfare for agricultural production in other countries (71%).

Concerning the awareness of European quality labels, most Europeans (56%) recognize the organic farming logo, while the protected geographical indication (PGI) and the protected designation of origin (PDO) logos could benefit from more recognition.

Background

This is the eighth Eurobarometer survey on Europeans, Agriculture, and the CAP, conducted in all 27 EU Member States from 13 June to 8 July 2024. 26,349 respondents from different social and demographic groups were interviewed in their national language. The survey provides a comprehensive insight into Europeans attitudes towards agriculture and the CAP.
