Today, Ave Schank-Lukas has been appointed as new Head of the European Commission Representation in Tallinn, Estonia. In this function, she will act as the official representative of the European Commission in Estonia under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. The date of effect for this appointment will be determined later.

Ms Schank-Lukas brings strong skills in strategic communication, international relations and stakeholder engagement. Through her current role at the Commission Representation in Estonia, she has gained in-depth knowledge of the countrys political landscape and developed the capacity to build constructive and lasting relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. She also has significant expertise in designing and implementing communication strategies that foster support for Commission policies, while ensuring that messages are tailored to local needs. Her strong background in negotiation, outreach and public communication will be key to representing the Commission effectively at national, regional and local levels.

Ms Schank-Lukas is currently Acting Head of the European Commission Representation in Estonia. Previously, she served as Economic Adviser in the same Representation, where she followed, among other issues, the negotiation and implementation of Estonias Recovery and Resilience Plan and developments linked to the Multiannual Financial Framework. Earlier in her career, she was Counsellor at the Estonian Permanent Representation during Estonias 2017 Council Presidency. Before joining the Commission in 2005, she worked at the Estonian Ministry of Agriculture.

Background

The Commission maintains Representations in all capitals of EU Member States, and Regional Offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. The Representations are the Commissions eyes, ears and voice on the ground in EU Member States. They interact with national authorities, stakeholders and citizens, and inform the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representations are appointed by the President of the European Commission and are her political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
