The latest Eurobarometer survey indicates that more than 8 out of 10 citizens (83%) view the influence of science and technology positively. About two-thirds (67%) agree that science and technology make life easier, healthier, and more comfortable.
Citizens expect renewable energy (87%), ICT (79%), and vaccines and combating infectious diseases (77%) to have a positive impact over the next 20 years.
A majority of Europeans want to learn more about scientific developments (58%). However, lack of time (40%), interest (37%), and knowledge (36%) remain barriers to engagement with science and technology.
The survey also examines trust and equity in science. 77% believe science and technology should consider the needs of all groups, while 72% think the government should ensure new technologies benefit everyone. Concerns exist over potential human rights violations (58%), and while 64% believe science and technology can improve the environment, they mostly help companies profit.
Regarding the sharing of scientific results, 80% agree that publicly funded research should be available online for free. More than 60% (63%) believe involving non-scientists ensures science and technology respond to societal needs.
This year, there is a focus on AI in scientific research, with mixed reactions. Just over a third (38%) trust AI-assisted research, while 25% distrust it. Half of EU citizens (50%) believe AI advances scientific discoveries to solve major challenges like climate change.
To capitalize on citizen interest and increase awareness of EU support for science and innovation, an EU communication campaign will launch in the first half of 2025. This campaign will highlight EU-supported research and innovation projects and their role in improving lives.
