On 17 March, during the ninth edition of the Brussels Conference on Standing with Syria: meeting the needs for a successful transition, the donor community pledged €5.8 billion. This commitment at a crucial time highlights the EU and international communitys readiness to aid Syria and its people towards a stable transition and the countrys reconstruction.
The total includes nearly €2.5 billion pledged by the EU for 2025 and 2026, as announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the Conference. The combined pledges from the EU and its Member States reached almost €3.4 billion, reaffirming their status as the largest donors to Syria and neighboring countries hosting Syrian refugees.
The Ministerial meeting gathered representatives from EU Member States, neighboring countries, partner countries, international organizations including the UN, and financial institutions; Syrias interim Foreign Minister al-Shaibani attended for the first time.
The event successfully mobilized crucial financial support to address key needs for a successful transition.
Since 2011, the European Union and its Member States have provided nearly €37 billion in response to the Syrian crisis, making them the largest donors of humanitarian and resilience assistance to Syria and the region.
As a key supporter of Syrian civil society, the EU also plans to promote a future meeting of Syrian civil society from across Syria and the diaspora in Damascus later this year.
