The Commission welcomes the agreement to reduce microplastic pollution
The European Commission announced a provisional agreement with the European Parliament and the Council to regulate and prevent microplastic pollution from plastic pellets. The new regulation aims to protect the environment while allowing European industries to operate sustainably. The rules are expected to cut plastic pellet losses by up to 74%, benefiting ecosystems, human health, and industries like agriculture and tourism.
To ease the burden on small businesses, only companies handling over 1,500 tonnes of plastic pellets annually will require certification. Smaller businesses will need only self-declaration. More details are available in our press release.
