Commission reports on conduct of 2024 European elections
Elections are fundamental to democracy. The European Commission has released a report on the 2024 European Parliament elections.
The report shows a voter turnout of 50.74%, highlighting the vibrancy of EU democracy. It details steps by member states and EU institutions to engage youth, increase womens participation, ease access for people with disabilities, and support mobile EU citizens. The report also highlights unprecedented cooperation to counter threats like foreign interference and disinformation.
Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, said: “The European Parliament elections are a cornerstone of democracy. We have made crucial strides to ensure these processes are resilient and fair.”
Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy and Justice, noted: “The 2024 elections showed stable turnout and unprecedented collaboration. Promoting high voter turnout and inclusive participation is vital.”
Since the 2019 elections, the EU has enhanced support for member states to bolster democracies through initiatives like the 2020 European Democracy Action Plan and the 2023 Defence of Democracy package.
The report draws from various sources, including Commission surveys and feedback from citizens and observers.
