EU strengthens cooperation on migration and border management with Bosnia and Herzegovina
Today, the European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina signed a new Status Agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). This agreement allows Frontex to conduct joint operations and deploy its standing corps anywhere along Bosnia and Herzegovinas borders, including with non-EU countries and at border crossing points like airports.
Enhancing cooperation on border management is key to the EUs engagement with Western Balkan partners, aimed at preventing irregular border crossings and enhancing regional security. This has resulted in a significant decrease in irregular border crossings, from 145,600 in 2022 to 21,520 in 2024, with a further 58% drop in the first four months of 2025.
This agreement aligns with the EU Action Plan on the Western Balkans from December 2022 and shows positive results in reducing migratory pressure and secondary movements on the Western Balkans route.
The agreement was signed today by Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, and Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Borjana Krišto.

Commission reports on the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum at halfway mark
The Commission is reporting today on the state of play regarding the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted in June 2024. Halfway through the transition period, important progress has been made both at EU level and by Member States, but further efforts are needed to address remaining challenges and ensure the EUs new robust migration management system is fully operational by June 2026.
The Commission calls on Member States to continue their efforts to ensure that the implementation of the Pact will be a success. While progress is being made at the technical level, sustained political engagement and ownership at national level remain essential to effectively address the identified challenges and achieve full readiness by mid-next year. The next implementation report will be published in October 2025, along with the first European Annual Asylum and Migration Report.
