Commission welcomes the political agreement on the review of the bank crisis management and deposit insurance framework
The European Commission welcomes the political agreement reached yesterday by the European Parliament and the Council on the Commission proposal to review the bank crisis management and deposit insurance framework (CMDI). This reform is a significant step towards advancing the Banking Union, which aims to protect financial stability and reduce reliance on taxpayer funding for failing banks.
The reform will enhance the capacity of resolution authorities to manage the failure of smaller banks, enabling an orderly exit, such as a sale, instead of liquidation, thereby minimizing economic disruption. It will also strengthen depositor protection across the EU while recognizing the unique aspects of national banking sectors.
Co-legislators have reached consensus on key reform aspects, with the Commission set to assist the European Parliament and Council in finalizing the agreements details. Following this, co-legislators will meet again to endorse the final text.
Maria Luis Albuquerque, Commissioner for Financial Services, stated: “This agreement reinforces the Banking Unions core promise: to manage bank failures efficiently and without burdening taxpayers. It exemplifies the Unions benefits for European citizens, enhancing protection against bank failures and improving overall financial stability and competitiveness. This reform is crucial for advancing the Banking Union and integrating EU banking markets, vital for the Savings and Investments Union.”
