Road Fatalities in the EU: 19,800 Deaths in 2024 According to the Commission
In 2024, 19,800 people lost their lives in road accidents across the EU, a slight decrease of 3% from the previous year. Despite this decrease, progress is too slow. Many member states are far from achieving the EU goal of halving road deaths by 2030.
Progress varies by member state. Sweden and Denmark have the safest roads, while Bulgaria and Romania have the highest death rates. The EU aims for vision zero, eliminating deaths and serious injuries on roads by 2050, requiring action at national and local levels.
