It is a pleasure to speak to you at the 2025 EU Global Health Policy Forum. In our interconnected world, our approach to health must be holistic and global. Diseases know no borders — they spread quickly across continents far from their origin.
COVID-19 made this painfully clear. Events in one part of the world can significantly impact families, businesses, and societies elsewhere. But global health is not just about combating diseases. It concerns fairness and human dignity. Everyone, regardless of their birthplace, deserves the chance for a healthy and fulfilling life. Yet millions lack this basic right — without access to healthcare, medicines, or clean water.
For the growing number of people living in conflict and fragile settings, these challenges are even greater — and their health needs are rising rapidly. We must urgently take collective action to change this. Cooperation is our greatest strength in addressing these challenges. We must unite — governments, international organizations, NGOs, academics, and the private sector – everyone here today – to develop effective solutions.
At a time when some of our closest allies question the rules-based order, Europe stands firm. We remain committed to defending multilateralism and being a reliable partner in global health. Our ongoing support for the mpox outbreak response in Africa proves that commitment.
The European Commission — through HERA, its Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority — has helped coordinate the delivery of nearly 440,000 vaccine doses so far, all donated in a Team Europe approach. The EU, along with our Member States, is by far the largest donor to this effort.
Europe will also continue to advocate for science- and evidence-based policy. This is why we welcome the brightest scientists and researchers from around the world, as freedom of research and science is one of our core values.
Finally, but crucially, gender equality must remain central to our global health efforts, including ensuring universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. I am pleased that this Forum will address this. Our new Roadmap for Womens Rights is a strong step in the right direction, as these rights are under pressure.
I hope this forum serves as a spark for fresh ideas and new partnerships. Lets work together to build a healthier, stronger future for everyone.
