Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are gathered to introduce the European Ocean Pact, a vital initiative. The Ocean covers over 70% of Earth, hosts 80% of global biodiversity, and supports half of our oxygen production. It underpins 74% of the EUs external trade, 99% of internet traffic, and 5 million EU jobs.
The ocean faces urgent issues like pollution and climate change, demanding immediate action. It also holds vast potential for sustainable blue economy investments.
The European Ocean Pact aims to unify policies for greater impact. Its six pillars include protecting ocean health, boosting the sustainable blue economy, supporting coastal communities, advancing ocean research, enhancing maritime security, and strengthening international governance.
Protection measures will involve habitat restoration and promoting Marine Protected Areas. Well also enhance the EUs maritime industry and support coastal communities with new strategies.
Our Ocean Observation Initiative will bolster ocean research, and well reinforce maritime security to protect critical infrastructure.
Internationally, well promote ocean sustainability and combat illegal fishing.
The Pact will streamline governance and policy coordination, with an Ocean Act set for 2027 to consolidate ocean-related targets.
An Ocean Board will oversee progress, ensuring the Pacts promises are fulfilled. Together, we aim to protect our ocean and strengthen the EUs role as a global ocean leader.
