Good afternoon.
June 11th marks a historic milestone for the European Union, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Gibraltar. I am proud to announce this after a successful meeting with Spanish Minister José Manuel Albares, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Gibraltars Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.
We have worked hard on an EU-UK political agreement regarding the future relationship with Gibraltar.
During my meetings with Minister Albares and Secretary Lammy last month, we recognized the momentum and agreed it was time to finalize the agreement.
Our main goal is to ensure the long-term prosperity of the region by eliminating barriers, checks, and controls on the movement of people and goods between Spain and Gibraltar, while maintaining the integrity of the Schengen Area, the EU Single Market, and the Customs Union.
This agreement is beneficial for all and will provide legal certainty and confidence for individuals and businesses in the region. Approximately 15,000 people cross daily between Gibraltar and Spain.
It reflects a strategic and collaborative approach to strengthen our relations following the UKs departure from the EU, marking a new chapter in our relationship.
Given todays realities and challenges, there is no alternative.
Next, the negotiating teams will quickly finalize the legal text, followed by the necessary internal procedures for signing and ratifying the agreement.
In conclusion, I want to thank the dedicated work of the Commission and UK negotiating teams, who have worked tirelessly, along with the close cooperation of Spanish authorities.
I sincerely appreciate the personal commitment of Minister Albares and Secretary Lammy; it has been a pleasure working with you to achieve this.
