Dear colleagues, friends of Europe, and friends of the Arctic,
I am pleased to open the Indigenous Peoples Dialogue, a key segment of the larger EU Arctic Forum.
This Dialogue offers a unique chance to share perspectives and collaborate towards a common goal: promoting the interests and well-being of Indigenous Peoples in the Arctic and beyond, enhancing our collective welfare.
I acknowledge the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Arctic Indigenous Peoples and their significant contributions to the social, economic, and environmental framework of the Arctic.
From the Sámi people of Finland, Sweden, and Norway, to the Inuit of Greenland, Canada, and Alaska, and the many other Indigenous groups calling the Arctic home, we recognize and respect the unique histories, traditions, and experiences of each community.
Thank you for being here today, giitu and qujanaq.
The EU is committed to supporting the interests of Arctic Indigenous Peoples and facilitating their participation in decision-making processes that affect their lands, lives, and livelihoods.
We believe Indigenous Peoples play a crucial role in shaping the Arctics future, and their knowledge, expertise, and perspectives are essential in addressing challenges faced by the Arctic and the world.
Through EU Arctic policy, we work towards sustainable development, environmental protection, and social cohesion, in close collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and other stakeholders.
We support initiatives promoting Indigenous Peoples self-determination, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment, ensuring their rights and interests are respected and protected.
We achieve this through funding and projects, capacity building, and empowerment. We increase collaboration in projects, support through grants, and believe that effective engagement is a win-win for the EU as well.
Our goal is for Indigenous Peoples in the Arctic to be heard and consulted on matters affecting them directly. We promote the principle of free, prior, and informed consent.
Throughout the Indigenous Peoples Dialogue, we will explore various topics, from the need for sustainable and responsible resource management to the role of education and cultural preservation, and the importance of promoting Indigenous Peoples health and well-being.
Additionally, the EU strives for the highest environmental and social standards regarding old projects and activities, ensuring compliance with national laws at all times.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Indigenous colleagues joining us today, especially the Indigenous youth, for their participation, insights, and contributions. Your voices, perspectives, and experiences are vital to this dialogue and the EUs work in the Arctic.
As we move forward, I emphasize the importance of cooperation, collaboration, and mutual respect. By working together, we can achieve much more than alone, and by listening to each others perspectives and learning from each others experiences, we can build a brighter future for all of us.
