Honourable Members, dear colleagues,
The first 100 days focused on our commitments, working with key sectors like farming and food. My visits to 8 Member States highlighted farmers needs for stability and recognition of their critical role in Europes economy and autonomy.
In these challenging times, a clear perspective is essential for food security and sovereignty. The recently adopted Vision for Agriculture and Food provides a roadmap for the future of Europes agri-food system.
Our clear message is that farming, fishing, and food are strategic sectors vital for Europe. The Vision emphasizes European food sovereignty as key to EU security. Our policies will support safe food production, protect rural landscapes, and adapt to local needs.
Farmers, fishers, and the food industry are part of the solution for a future-proof sector. We will develop pragmatic solutions in consultation with them.
The Vision results from close engagement with stakeholders, including the European Parliament. It marks the beginning of further cooperation to develop key initiatives together.
Our guiding question: How to build a sustainable agri-food system for future generations? The Vision aims for an attractive, competitive, future-proof, and fair EU agricultural and food sector.
The Vision outlines four priority areas focusing on sustainability:
1. An attractive and predictable agri-food sector: We will support farmers through CAP and new income opportunities.
2. A competitive and resilient sector: We will push for fair global competition and risk management.
3. A future-proof sector working with nature: We will preserve resources and incentivize ecosystem services.
4. Strengthening food-consumer links: We will promote fair conditions in rural areas and reconnect people with food.
Innovation, research, and digital solutions will support these initiatives. This is only the beginning, with further collaboration needed to develop and expand key initiatives.
Thank you.
