I am thrilled to be here today, especially with these amazing young women. Let me share a little secret...

I have been European Commissioner for Equality for just over three months. One of the unexpected joys of the job is talking to and listening to young women and girls like you.

I have spent time with girls in tough circumstances — in Ukraine, Syria, Jordan, Türkiye, and Bangladesh. Strong and courageous girls – helping in war, taking care of family, and supporting their communities while studying in shelters or refugee camps.

These girls face enormous challenges but also have big dreams of a better, more peaceful future for themselves and their communities.

In Jordan, I remember especially Farah, 13, with big dreams of becoming a judge or journalist. We met before, when she was 7, at the Syria conference in Brussels. Her powerful message of hope deeply touched the leaders.

At a recent Youth Policy Dialogue on preparing our societies for todays threats, I met Hannah, a young volunteer from Ukraine. She spoke of the need for physical strength to resist, but also mental and emotional strength to support her community.

All these girls share one thing – the spark of life and hope in their eyes. They believe in a brighter future. These girls open my eyes and inspire me. I always return to Brussels more determined to help them.

Young people, especially young women, often lead the charge in making the world a better place. They protect our planet and promote climate action.

Young women are strong voices for gender equality, breaking barriers and demanding equal opportunities.

The European Union stands fully with them.

Just last week, the European Commission adopted a Roadmap for Womens Rights. This Roadmap reaffirms our full commitment to equality between women and men.

This Roadmap addresses many womens rights principles relevant to girls activism.

Here are three:

First, it highlights the right of every woman and girl to live free from gender-based violence, including online.

Second, it reaffirms the right to quality and inclusive education without bullying and discrimination.

Third, it reiterates the right of every woman to safely participate in public and political life, crucial for young activists.

Empowered girls empower the world. We must hear their voices and support their leadership. Through their passion and activism, they break barriers and build a future where gender equality is natural.

I am with you, girls. Together, lets make the world fairer for everyone.
