Honourable Chair Gozi, dear Sandro,
Honourable Chair de Cordova, dear Marsha,
Right Honourable Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations, dear Nick,
Distinguished Members,
I am delighted to be here today for the fifth meeting of the EU-UK Parliamentary Partnership Assembly. This meeting comes at a crucial time as we prepare for the first EU-UK Summit on 19 May. I look forward to our exchange today and hearing your perspectives.
I propose to divide my intervention into two parts:
- First, I would like to reflect and update you on the state of play of EU-UK relations.
- Second, I would like to discuss the future prospects for enhancing cooperation.
The EU and the UK are like-minded partners, working closely on shared challenges. In these uncertain times, it is essential to continue our collaboration.
The relationship is based on two agreements: the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. These are crucial for structured strategic cooperation. Regarding the Withdrawal Agreement, citizens rights remain a top priority. With millions of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU, it is important that this agreement works for everyone. We are making progress, and I want to thank Nick for his efforts.
For the Windsor Framework, we must continue to promote the implementation of all safeguards, especially in agri-food and customs areas. We aim to deliver benefits for people and businesses in Northern Ireland and protect the integrity of the single market.
The Trade and Cooperation Agreement is ambitious and offers numerous cooperation opportunities. We are committed to maximizing its potential and strengthening our relationship with the UK.
The EU-UK Summit on 19 May offers an opportunity to advance the agenda. I look forward to your feedback and am happy to answer any questions.
