It is an honor to be here to meet the community shaping European aviation. As the Commissioner, I am here to share my vision for a stronger, more competitive, and sustainable aviation sector.

Aviation has always fascinated me. As a former Governor and President of the European Committee of the Regions, I understand its importance in connecting us. The pandemic showed us a Europe without aviation, which was challenging for many.

Aviation has made travel affordable, opened new business opportunities, and strengthened innovation. It connects isolated regions and boosts growth. Aviation and Europe thrive together.

Aviation is linked to tourism, another key part of my portfolio. We aim to create opportunities for both sectors. European aviation rules exist for safety, our top priority. The Germanwings tragedy reminds us of this duty.

Some express concerns about aviations mention in mission letters. Aviation remains a European success story. However, we must address challenges like competitiveness, innovation, defense, autonomy, and sustainability. Decarbonization is crucial for growth, energy independence, and social progress. ReFuelEU Aviation supports sustainable aviation fuels and strengthens energy independence.

Efforts and investments are needed to scale up eSAF. Businesses must lead, but the Commission will support through the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. Decarbonization requires collaboration from airlines, fuel producers, start-ups, and citizens. We must ensure SAF agreements strengthen Europe.

Competitiveness remains vital. Reviewing the Air Services Regulation will focus on international competitiveness. We aim to reduce unnecessary red tape and enhance airport economic regulations. Carbon leakage is a concern; we are studying this and will act if necessary.

Passenger rights are crucial. Strong protections exist, but improvements are needed. We strive for fair, simple rules. Financial stability for airlines must be balanced with passenger rights. Collaboration is essential.

We work with EASA for safe skies and SESAR for innovative air traffic management. Europe leads in sustainable aircraft technology. ICAO collaboration is vital for global decarbonization. Our mission is to promote SAF and energy independence globally.

Aviation has contributed significantly to Europe. It connects people and economies, embodying freedom, unity, and equality. A new chapter begins, and your success is Europes success. Heres to a competitive, fair, sustainable, and proudly European future.
