Speech by Commissioner Lahbib at the Nutrition for Growth Summit

Today we unite with a vision: a world free from all forms of malnutrition. This responsibility is immense because together, we wield great power.

Nutrition is about dignity and opportunity. The EU has turned bold pledges into action since 2013, leading the fight against malnutrition. From 2021 to 2023, the EU exceeded its pledge, investing €4.4 billion to make a real difference.

We aim to reduce child stunting significantly, aiming to reduce the number of stunted children by seven million by 2025. Even in crises, the EUs approach delivers vital support, proving that fairness, inclusion, and resilience lead to progress.

Today, we commit €3.4 billion for 2024-2027 to reinforce our global fight. This European promise ensures better nutrition, stronger food systems, and improved health where needed most.

Prioritizing nutrition across sectors saves lives, offering children a healthier future, even in remote or crisis-hit areas. Ive seen the impact of EU aid in Ukraine, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, and Bangladesh, providing meals, water, and shelter.

As Commissioner for Equality, I highlight the plight of women and girls, often the last to eat. Ending malnutrition means restoring dignity, ensuring no woman or girl is left behind.

While proud of our commitment, more remains. We adapt our approach, combining urgent aid with long-term development, focusing on research and sustainable practices.

Through Horizon Europe, we invest €113 million annually in food system research. We empower local communities by promoting sustainable agriculture and access to nutritious foods.

We need private sector involvement. Our Global Gateway supports local food production in partner countries, empowering communities. Financial pledges are vital, but partnerships between governments, civil society, and the private sector are key.

The Team Europe approach harnesses member state expertise to combat malnutrition from all angles.

Malnutrition is not just statistics; its a child too weak to hold a pencil, a mother skipping meals. We have the power and responsibility to change this.

The EU leads by example, keeping nutrition central to global development. We know what to do; it requires courage and solidarity. Together, we can create a world where every child wakes up nourished and dreams without limits.

We can do it. Lets make it happen.
