Your Majesty,
President of the Congress, dear Francina Armengol,
President of the Senate, dear Pedro Rollán,
Presidents of Parliaments from the Union for the Mediterranean,
Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, dear Nasser,
Members of Parliament, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you for your hospitality. It is an honor to be here in Granada under the Spanish Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.
The Mediterranean is a region of shared history and culture. As the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, my goal is to connect people and economies from North Africa, the Middle East, and the Gulf with the EU.
Coming from Dubrovnik, I have a personal connection to the Mediterranean. Our region was once a hub for trade and dialogue, and I aim to strengthen these partnerships today.
In times of geopolitical uncertainty, the Union for the Mediterranean plays a crucial role. I am dedicated to enhancing this Union for mutual benefit, emphasizing strategic connections and cooperation.
Lets focus on the Middle East: the cease-fire in Gaza needs support, and we back the Arab Reconstruction Plan. Our partnership with the Palestinian Authority is vital for progress towards a two-state solution.
In Lebanon, we see potential for reform and stability, while Syria faces a challenging transition. Our step by step approach aligns with Syrias inclusive political transition efforts.
In North Africa, our partnerships with Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria are crucial for socio-economic development and regional stability.
The Gulf countries are increasingly mediating regional conflicts, and we welcome their cooperation with the EU, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Our Mediterranean focus is well-received, indicating strong potential for collaborative success. Key areas include renewable energy, digital connectivity, and migration.
As Commissioner for Demography, I stress the importance of youth engagement. I propose a New Pact for the Mediterranean, emphasizing bilateral cooperation tailored to partner needs.
This Pact will serve as an umbrella for regional initiatives like the Trans-Mediterranean Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED), focusing on renewable energy and economic development.
The New Pact will also enhance cultural and educational exchanges, potentially establishing a Mediterranean University Network and a Youth Parliamentary Assembly.
Security cooperation is crucial, as highlighted by the new Internal Security Strategy to combat organized crime and develop legal migration pathways.
Through exchanges and consultations, I invite all stakeholders to contribute to the New Pact for the Mediterranean.
In conclusion, now is the time for Europe to deepen its Mediterranean relations. Together, we can write a new chapter in our shared history.
Thank you for your attention, and I wish you a successful and inspiring Forum.
