Ladies and Gentlemen,
First, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Minister Planas for hosting me in Spain and organizing this important conference with Spanish institutions and stakeholders.
From the start of my mandate as Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, I have valued visiting coastal communities and maintaining an open dialogue with the fisheries sector.
Its crucial to hear their concerns: Brussels is not far from Spain - Brussels stands by your side!
Visiting Spain was important due to its role in the Mediterranean and Atlantic.
We are working together on challenges like the European Ocean Pact. This initiative can significantly impact the health of our oceans and coastal communities. With Minister Planas, we discussed its content.
Another priority is evaluating the common fisheries policy. We need to ensure these rules are effective for a healthy marine environment. We will retain positive aspects and address weaknesses.
This morning, I visited the Fisheries Monitoring Center and met regional representatives. Their commitment to sustainable fisheries is commendable.
The fisheries sector faces challenges like sustainability and modernization. Tailoring solutions to specific circumstances is crucial. We aim for sustainable practices.
Finally, I want to emphasize Spains crucial role in EU fisheries. Spains diversity in fisheries reflects its rich traditions and waters. As a key player, Spain contributes to sustainable fisheries.
This is my first visit to Spain as Commissioner. This is the start of regular contact with Spain and the sector. More visits are forthcoming.
Minister, together, we will continue to advance on our shared objectives for seas and communities.
