Georgias Foreign Agents Registration Act is a major setback for the countrys democracy. Together with new broadcasting and grant laws, it restricts dissent and freedom, affecting activists, civil society, and independent media. These repressive measures threaten Georgias democratic foundation and its citizens future in a free society.
In 2024, the European Council concluded that these actions put Georgias EU path at risk, effectively halting accession. The EU calls on Georgian authorities to respect their citizens democratic demands and release detained journalists, activists, and political leaders. The EU is prepared to consider Georgias return to the EU accession path if credible actions are taken to reverse democratic backsliding. Responsibility lies with Georgian authorities.
