President Xi,
Thank you for welcoming us again to this magnificent city and country. This visit is particularly special as we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. Over these decades, our cooperation has deepened significantly. Both Europe and China have undergone remarkable transformations. The European Union now comprises around 450 million people, while China has emerged as a manufacturing and technological leader, lifting 800 million people out of poverty. This change is a source of global inspiration. Today, Europe and China rank among the world’s three largest economic powers, and our partnership is crucial.
The EU is China’s largest trading partner, and China ranks as the EU’s third. Our daily bilateral trade exceeds EUR 2 billion. Europe has long supported Chinas growth, yet as our ties have strengthened, so have the imbalances. We have reached a critical juncture. Rebalancing our relationship is vital for mutual benefit. Both China and Europe must recognize each others concerns and propose real solutions.
On climate change and environmental issues, we have a shared agenda. We are committed to the Paris Agreement and aim for success at COP30 in Belém.
President Xi,
The next 50 years of our relationship are unwritten. We have a chance to rebalance our ties for the benefit of both the people of China and Europe. Thank you for your hospitality, and I look forward to our discussions.
