The newly adopted laws, such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act and Broadcasting Law, without public consultation, give the Georgian authorities more power to suppress dissent and enforce repression. These laws threaten civic activists, civil society, and independent media, undermining human rights and democratic processes.
These actions are contrary to EU values of democracy, rule of law, and media pluralism. They may harm Georgias EU aspirations. Commitment to EU principles is essential.
Most Georgians want EU membership. We urge the authorities to stop violence, release unjustly detained individuals, suspend repressive laws, consult the Venice Commission, and engage in dialogue with civil society and political actors.
Georgias EU accession depends on its authorities. The EU is ready to support Georgias democratic and European future.
