Everyone in the Netherlands has the right to legal aid. When someone cannot afford this legal aid, the government can provide a subsidy. The Committee for Justice and Security will debate on Tuesday, April 1, about this subsidized legal aid with the State Secretary for Legal Protection, Teun Struycken. The debate can be followed from 6:00 PM via the livestream on this website and Debat Direct.
The committee debate will also discuss the future of social advocacy. When someone cannot afford a lawyer, they are assigned a social lawyer. In recent years, the supply of social lawyers has decreased. In a letter, State Secretary Struycken outlines two ways to strengthen social advocacy: sustainability and a reasonable compensation. Committee members will discuss these possible solutions with the State Secretary.
Agenda Items
Other items on the agenda of the committee debate include the implementation of the motion by Joost Sneller on an emergency investment in social advocacy, the report On the Way to Better Legal Aid and the progress of the approach to strengthening access to justice.
