The current debt collection system allows a small debt to quickly escalate into a significantly higher amount. This is how collection agencies profit from others distress. The House of Representatives will debate on February 6 on tackling this so-called debt collection industry. You can follow the debate live from 19:15.
For the debate, Teun Struycken, State Secretary for Legal Protection, and Jurgen Nobel, State Secretary for Participation and Integration, will attend the session.
Outline and Interdepartmental Policy Research
On February 28, 2024, various members of parliament asked the government in a motion to prepare a new debt collection system. Subsequently, then Minister for Legal Protection, Franc Weerwind, and then Minister for Poverty Policy, Participation, and Pensions, Carola Schouten, initiated an exploration. This has now been completed and resulted in an outline with various ideas and policy options. Parallel to the outline, an Interdepartmental Policy Research (IBO) on problematic debts has been drafted. The outcomes will be discussed during the debate.
