Since 2015, the wolf has returned to the Netherlands, causing various concerns, such as whether there is enough space and how animals and people can coexist safely. The House of Representatives will debate these and other questions on Tuesday, March 25. The debate can be followed live from 4:45 PM via the website and the Debat Direct app.
For this debate, the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature, Jean Rummenie, will attend the House.
From Thirty-Member Debate to Plenary Debate
Party leader Caroline van der Plas (BBB) requested a debate on the wolf during the Agenda of Activities of September 3, 2024. At that time, there was not enough support for a plenary debate, but there was for a thirty-member debate. Since it sometimes takes a long time for such debates to be scheduled, Van der Plas repeatedly drew attention to the subject in the following weeks. During the Agenda of Activities of February 18, 2025, there was sufficient support for a plenary debate.
What is a Thirty-Member Debate?
To get a debate on the agenda, a member of parliament needs the support of the majority of the House. But if that fails, a member can request a thirty-member debate. In addition to the applicant, at least 29 other members are needed to get such a debate on the House of Representatives agenda. Because the threshold for requesting is low, there is often a backlog of thirty-member debates. When scheduling these debates, the oldest request takes precedence. If a thirty-member debate does not take place within twelve weeks of approval, it expires. A member can then request an extension twice, but after 36 weeks, the debate is definitively canceled.
