The House of Representatives will debate on Wednesday, September 3, about a proposal to amend the Embryo Act. The initiators want to abolish the temporary ban on creating embryos for scientific research. You can follow the debate live from 7:25 PM via Debat Direct.
Currently, according to the Embryo Act, research can only be conducted with embryos that remain after IVF treatments. The special creation of embryos for science has been temporarily banned for twenty years. Initially, it was intended that this ban would only last five years, but it still applies. With the bill, the initiators aim to lift this temporary ban.
Initiative by Members of Parliament
The draft bill has been submitted by Members of Parliament Jan Paternotte (D66) and Harry Bevers (VVD). They will sit in section K during the debate to defend the bill. Judith Tielen, the State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport, will also attend the debate in the House of Representatives.
