At the beginning of April, President Trump announced increases in import tariffs for several countries. These increased to over one hundred percent. The increase also affects the European Union. A few days later, the American president rolled back some tariffs entirely or partially and announced a ninety-day pause, including for the European Union.
Debate Requested
The debate was requested as early as February by Member of Parliament Frans Timmermans (GroenLinks-PvdA). A month later, his VVD colleague Roelien Kamminga confirmed the request in a slightly modified form.
Trade War
The debate should focus purely on trade and the Dutch economy and not on Trumps statements in general, the House has agreed. If a broad trade war breaks out, the consequences for the Dutch consumer and economy will be significant, said Kamminga in early March.
