The inflation in the Netherlands has been high for several years. Last year it was 3.3 percent. Based on an analysis sent by the Ministers of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Social Affairs and Employment, the House will debate inflation on Wednesday, April 2. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and rising energy prices, inflation has been higher than desired for several years, the ministers explain in their analysis. They made this analysis at the request of the House.
Inflation Decreases
Throughout 2024, inflation was 3.3 percent. Early this year, the figures fluctuated, partly due to seasonal influences. The Central Planning Bureau (CPB) expects that inflation in the Netherlands will gradually decrease: this year 3.0 and next year 2.4 percent. In the Eurozone as a whole, inflation is lower.
Purchasing Power Decreased
The inflation of recent years is felt in the wallet, while wages and pensions did not rise enough to compensate for it. As a result, many households were able to buy fewer goods and services in 2022 and 2023 than before. In 2024, purchasing power increased slightly again, and this is also expected to happen in the coming years, according to the ministers.
