In the House of Representatives, a commemoration took place on Tuesday, September 9, following the passing of Kars Veling. In 2002, he was faction leader for ChristenUnie. Veling passed away on August 13, 2025, at the age of 77.

Veling began his political career in the Senate. From 1991 to 2002, he was a member of first the single-member faction GPV and then the combined GPV/RPF faction. In 2002, these parties merged into ChristenUnie. Veling became the partys list leader for the House of Representatives elections. Later, he also became faction leader. After 2002, he left the House of Representatives.

Strength in Reflection

Veling was not a man of grand gestures or loud words. His strength lay in reflection, in nuanced judgment, in the friendly but principled approach to complex issues, said Speaker of the House Martin Bosma in his commemorative speech.

When does the House of Representatives commemorate?

Commemorations in the House of Representatives occur upon the passing of heads of state from countries with which the Netherlands has close allied relations. This includes member states of the European Union, Council of Europe, and NATO. Additionally, there are plenary commemorations for the passing of members of the Royal Family, Ministers of State, and former Speakers, Prime Ministers, and faction leaders. There are also commemorations for the passing of sitting members of Parliament and officials working in the House of Representatives.
