On Tuesday, May 27, a commemoration took place in the House of Representatives following the death of Jan Terlouw. From 1973 to 1981, he was the faction leader of D66. Terlouw passed away on May 16, 2025, at the age of 93.
Terlouw entered the House of Representatives for D66 after the elections of 1971. Two years later, he became faction leader. After leaving the House in 1981, he held various positions, including Minister of Economic Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister, Commissioner of the Queen, and member of the Senate.
Administrator and Bridge Builder
As a politician, Terlouw stood for integrity in politics and logical reasoning, said Chairman Martin Bosma in his commemorative speech. His nuanced course often followed unexpected lines. He was particularly persistent in defending his positions but simultaneously showed an open mind to the arguments of others. This combination made him an effective administrator and bridge builder.
When does the House of Representatives commemorate?
In the House of Representatives, commemorations take place upon the death of heads of state from countries with which the Netherlands has close allied relations. This includes member states of the European Union, Council of Europe, and NATO. Additionally, there are plenary commemorations upon the death of members of the Royal House, Ministers of State, and former House Chairs, Prime Ministers, and faction leaders. Commemorations also occur upon the death of sitting members of Parliament and officials working in the House of Representatives.
